Hells Canyon Oral History and Folklore

cleaning sturgeon
Cleaning 19 sturgeon caught by the night crew at Eagle Bar mine.

This project remodels  oral history papers I wrote for a folklore class and an honors geology class  in 1978. I recorded my grandfather telling about mining in Idaho’s Seven Devils Mountains along the Snake River  in Hells Canyon in about 1927. He gave me photos of the mines, hauling equipment up the steep narrow road, my grandmother’s school, and some of the 19 sturgeon the night crew captured after throwing 40 sticks of dynamite into the river. He gifted me with his rock hammer, too. I still use it.

I’ll post the text and photos soon. For now, here is one I put on to attract attention.
